Philip Newman
I am a spiritual director/spiritual companion who trained in the 2020-22 Pacific Jubilee SoulGuiding program.
I am a minister of The United Church of Canada, freshly retired. Four decades of ministry saw me walk alongside persons of substantial faith, of no faith, and everyone in between. All were seeking to embrace a fuller sense of being alive. I found myself on holy ground again and again. These times instilled in me a deep curiosity in the activity of the sacred in our lives. While steeped in the Christian tradition, I am open to, I learn from, and I grow from other faiths and traditions.
In spiritual direction we gently love ourselves “home.” Spiritual direction (or spiritual accompaniment) helps us to read the map of life’s terrain and to navigate the contours of our own life. The wisdom that enables us to take this journey of spiritual direction is very near to us. It is in our hearts for us to notice and observe. And there, in the safe space of spiritual direction, in the space of sitting with our truths, the place of mystery, the unknown, the place where we let go of our motivations in order to be seen by ourselves and others, to be known, to be welcomed home — “we offer ourselves what we have longed to have given to us. We acknowledge our feelings—the power and depth of each one—giving them space to roll through us, to breathe and take on life.” (Richard Rohr)
I am available for spiritual direction/accompaniment in person in the Kamloops area or anywhere remotely by phone, FaceTime, Skype, Messenger, What’s App, and likely other means that I have yet to discover.
The Journey of Unfolding
What do we need in order to realize
there is a journey to be taken? What do
we fear that keeps us from taking it?
Go deeper! Find your will. Find your
love and your wisdom. Devote yourself
to the miracle that is you. Let your own
passion be the pressure that turns
carbon into crystal. There is no more
worthy or miraculous adventure than
the journey of unfolding.- Ann Mortifee from In Love with the Mystery
