What is Supervision for Spiritual Directors?
“Supervision is an ethical necessity for active spiritual directors. When done regularly, this practice fosters accountability to the spiritual direction community and society. It invites spiritual directors to stay true to their vocational call.
Supervision for spiritual directors is the practice of regularly meeting with a trained supervisor or a peer group of spiritual directors to contemplatively reflect on what happened during a spiritual direction conversation. With compassion, they explore the spiritual director’s experience to make sure the director is honestly and responsibly serving the person being companioned. This requires authentic and vulnerable self-examination, while keeping all details confidential.”
