As a Spiritual Companion

My vocational training includes completing the spiritual direction program of Pacific Jubilee in 2010, and the Soul Mentoring program in 2018. I completed medical training in 1987 and am a family physician and faculty member at McMaster University with a focus in palliative care, mental health and addiction issues, health and poverty and HIV care.

Our suffering comes from separation— from planet earth, our communities, our families and indeed from ourselves. Our healing comes from re-uniting, re-membering, in all of these dimensions. Being accompanied on any path of healing and discovery is a gift. Being invited to accompany another on their path is a privilege.

Spiritual accompaniment is one of the greatest gifts I have received on my own journey of discovery and re-membering—making sense of personal and family struggle; growth beyond and more deeply into Christian faith roots; and challenge of serving within a family practice. Many years of receiving spiritual direction led me to pursue my own formation as a spiritual director. I have had the joy of integrating these principles for the practice and teaching of family medicine, as well as the accompaniment of others outside of medical practice.

I am available for spiritual accompaniment either in person in the Hamilton vicinity, or remotely. I also work with professional and religious groups to develop retreats and curriculum on self-care, resilience, end of life planning and spiritual accompaniment. I am a member of Spiritual Directors International.
