“This is the first, wildest and wisest thing I know,
that the soul exists,
and that it is built entirely out of attentiveness”
As a Jubilee Leader
My involvement with Pacific Jubilee began in 2008. I took the step of being a participant in SoulGuiding. I was searching for a better sense of my own soul and spirituality, and for a better path to healing than medical school had taught me. I became more familiar with the soul, its wounds and its healing, and found the path I needed both for myself and many of those I was with. As a program mentor, I help plan, organize and facilitate the SoulGuiding program and I am a member of the Pacific Jubilee Society Board. I am newly retired from teaching family medicine; offering ways of inspiring and supporting the well-being of medical teachers; offering medical and spiritual care to people experiencing homelessness; and offering spiritual accompaniment more widely.
As a Spiritual Companion
My own spiritual formation was launched when I was born into a home steeped in Mennonite history, tradition, and teaching. As my consciousness opened up, I soon realized I would need to sort out what I wanted to hold onto, and what I needed to release as I increasingly sensed being a misfit for this specific path. Many turns in the road have brought me to an appreciation of the religious narrative unfolded in the Anglican tradition; soul work informed by the mystics and poets, and by indigenous and sufi wisdom; and revelation of truths from the universe through science and immersion in the natural world. These are all threads I delight in drawing upon.
I understand our suffering as coming from separation— from planet earth, our communities, our families and indeed from ourselves. Our healing comes from re-uniting, re-membering, in all of these dimensions. Finding and exploring our own stories is a part of this re-uniting. Being accompanied on any path of healing and discovery is a gift. Being invited to accompany another on their path is a unique privilege. Spiritual accompaniment is one of the greatest gifts I have received on my own journey of discovery and re-membering.
I offer spiritual accompaniment either in person in the Hamilton vicinity, or virtually. I also work with health care and religious groups to develop retreats and curriculum on self-care, resilience, leadership, end of life planning and spiritual accompaniment.
